Parrots & parakeets
The psittacids (parrots, budgerigars, lovebirds, cockatoos) make up a very diverse family, with lifespans ranging from 8 years for the budgerigar to over 60 years for the large macaw. This diversity of species corresponds to a variety of diets: seed-eaters (budgerigar), fruit-eaters and seed-eaters (Amazon parrots, African grey), strict fruit-eaters (lorikeets), or opportunistic omnivores. A unique diet is not suitable for any.
For decades, St Laurent has been referencing expert brands in the psittacid segment for avian breeders, zoos, and passionate individuals. Our Parrots & Budgerigars section organizes the offerings by use: seed mixes, extruded recipes, snacks, and supplements.
Seed mixes: the traditional staple of parrot & parakeet diets
The seed mix remains the staple food for most breeders. Quality mixes combine millet, canary seed, niger seed, hulled sunflower, flax, hemp, and cardy, in proportions suitable for the species (budgerigar vs large parakeet vs parrot). Prefer fresh seeds, free from dust and from the latest harvest — a rancid mix loses its essential fatty acids and becomes a health risk.
Extruded and complete pellets
Extruded feeds provide an appropriate response to the main drawback of mixes: selection. Many parrots, left to their own devices, only consume the fattiest seeds (sunflower, peanut) and develop deficiencies. The extruded feed, formulated to provide a complete balance in every bite, eliminates this risk. Our selection includes the Mazuri and Versele-Laga recipes recognized in the professional segment.
Dried fruits, freeze-dried vegetables, and natural supplements
To enrich the diet, dried fruits (papaya, apricot, pineapple), freeze-dried vegetables (carrot, broccoli), and nut mixes provide variety and stimulation. Choose unsulfured and unsweetened dried fruits: industrial versions intended for human consumption are often unsuitable.
Snacks and food stimulation
Snacks contribute to environmental enrichment, essential for the psychological well-being of captive psittacines. Seed sticks to hang, natural branches, refillable toys, foraging toys: the parrot should be able to dedicate a significant part of its day to searching for and working for its food, just like in the wild.
Vitamins and minerals
Calcium (sepiolite, cuttlefish bone, mineral blocks), vitamins A and D3 (crucial for indoor parrots without UV exposure), probiotics post-antibiotic treatment, natural colorants for the plumage expression of cardinals and red canaries: supplements are targeted for specific contexts. Our vitamin section features the internationally recognized brands Nekton, Vetark, and Versele-Laga.
Complementary rays
Discover also our sections Other exotic birds (canaries, mandarins, finches), All species (grit, cuttlebone, universal mixes) and our breeding and enrichment equipment (cages, nests, foraging toys) that complete the setup of the aviary.
